Strana (The Country) is one of Ukraine's leading news sites. For a long time, the project, which was only founded in 2016, only published articles in Russian. Since early 2023 it has been published in both Russian and Ukrainian. Strana has always had a tense relationship with the government, both under Poroshenko and under Zelensky. The authorities have carried out raids of its editorial offices on several occasions. Editor-in-chief Igor Guzhva was granted political asylum in Austria in autumn 2018. The financing of the website is unclear. Many observers describe it as pro-Russian and financed by Russia. Since 21 August 2021, access to the website has been blocked nationwide by the National Security Council and it only reaches its readership via Telegram.
