Until 2005, grani.ru belonged to Putin's opponent Boris Berezovsky, who went into exile in the UK in 2003. In 2014, the project, which was continued by opposition journalists, became the first Russian online outlet to be blocked by Russia's media supervisory authority, in reaction to which it switched to the domain graniru.org and worked with "mirrors" on the Google server App Engine. The website provides no information about its editorial offices.
