Founded in 2011 by journalists who had left the religiously conservative Millî Gazete, which is close to the Millî Görüş movement, Milat newspaper initially represented positions close to those of the conservative Islamic HAS party. When the HAS party merged with Erdoğan's AKP in 2012, Milat adopted a pro-government course, with Islam and religious issues featuring prominently.
