The New Times emerged from the magazine Novoye Vremya, founded in 1943, which changed its name to The New Times in 2007. It has been owned by its editor-in-chief Yevgenia Albats since 2013. The print edition was discontinued in 2016, and since then it has faced repeated complaints and accusations from the media supervisory authority, which blocked the website after the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Albats emigrated to the US in 2022.
