Politika is Serbia's oldest daily newspaper. In the 1990s, it was controlled by the Milošević government. Since 1997, its publisher has been a public limited company whose shares belong to state institutions. In 2001, the WAZ media group acquired 50 percent of the shares in the paper, which were sold to the East Media Group owned by entrepreneur Miroslav Bogićević in 2012. Bogićević was a supporter of the ruling Democratic Party, but turned his back on the party after the change of government. In 2022, these shares were sold to Media026, owner of the tabloid Večernje novosti. Politika describes itself as a quality newspaper. Its reporting follows the government's agenda. According to the OSCE election observation mission, Politika presented the government and its candidates in a generally positive light in the run-up to the 2022 elections. The opinion section is dominated by voices that support the government's discourse and actions.
