Exxpress was founded in March 2021. It describes itself as a "conservative-liberal digital media outlet" and news website. In practice, however, Exxpress's coverage displays a polarising, right-wing bias. The right-wing populist Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its representatives are given a lot of space and their topics are covered on a daily basis. The editor-in-chief is Richard Schmitt, who previously held senior positions at the tabloids Kronen Zeitung, Heute and Österreich. Schmitt has been rumoured to have close ties to the FPÖ since the scandal known as the "Ibiza affair". The publisher and majority owner of Exxpress is Eva Schütz, who has close ties to the Christian-conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and former chancellor Sebastian Kurz. She worked in the ÖVP-led Ministry of Finance from 2018 to 2019 and her husband Alexander was one of the party's major donors.
