The Lithuanian news agency ELTA was founded in 1920 as a telegraph agency in Kaunas. After the Soviet occupation in 1940, ELTA became the regional office of the state-owned Soviet (now Russian) news agency TASS. When Lithuania became independent ELTA initially remained state-owned, but was privatised in 1995. The agency has changed hands several times over the years and has been owned by the Estonian Ekspress Grupp since 2022. It publishes more than 600 text and photo articles daily in Lithuanian, Russian and English. Commentaries by ELTA authors appear in various media.
