Dnevnik's predecessor, Ljubljanski Dnevnik, was founded by the (anti-fascist) Slovene National Liberation Front and developed into one of the country's leading newspapers. However it has been steadily losing readers since 2004. Its majority shareholder, the Slovenian publisher DZS has 35 percent of the shares. Styria Media International AG owns the second largest stake (25.74 percent) in the paper.
