Il Giornale was regarded as an alternative to both right and left-wing media when it was founded in 1974, however owing to financial difficulties founder Indro Montanelli accepted financial aid from Silvio Berlusconi in 1977. When Berlusconi entered politics at the end of 1993, Montanelli left the paper. After his departure Il Giornale changed course and adopted its current conservative-populist stance. Nowadays the paper is better known for its sensationalism.
