Founded in 1703, the Wiener Zeitung was known as the oldest newspaper in the world until its closure on 30.06.2023. It was owned by the Republic of Austria and was the official gazette of the government of the Republic of Austria. From 2004 onwards it raised its profile by providing comprehensive coverage of all areas. More recently it aspired to be a liberal quality newspaper. However, the paper's coverage was always subject to political influence depending on the party affiliation of the Secretary of State for Arts and Media. Plummeting readership figures were cited as the reason for the discontinuation of the print edition in 2023. An online edition has been launched, albeit with a considerably downsized editorial team.
