Radio Europa Liberă (Radio Free Europe) is a United States government-funded organisation that broadcasts from Prague to several Eastern European countries. Before 1989 it was an essential source of information for many Romanian citizens and their only possibility to hear positions and opinions other than those imposed by dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. In 2008 - one year after Romania joined the EU - the Romanian radio programme was discontinued. Since then the editors have run a news website featuring audio and video content. Since the 1990s, however, the organisation has broadcast content to the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria on an hourly basis - in Romanian and Russian. According to the editors the broadcaster is politically neutral.
