Neatkarīgā was established in 1904 under the name Cīņa (Fight) and was the main organ of the Communist Party of Latvia during the Soviet era. In 1990 it was renamed to Neatkarīgā cīņa (Independent Fight), which was later shortened to Neatkarīgā. Since 1999 the paper has belonged to the Latvian oligarch Aivars Lembergs, mayor of Ventspils since 1988, who has been accused of using the paper to pursue his own social and political objectives. Lembergs himself often writes commentaries for Neatkarīgā. In 2016, the publishing company Mediju nams was initially sold to the brother-in-law of Aivars Lembergs' son Anrijs. The owner is now Anastasija Udalova, the partner of Oļegs Osinovskis, once the richest man in Estonia, who has also been charged with corruption. Since May 2020 Neatkarīga has only been available online.
