Haley enters the US presidential race
Competition for Donald Trump: former UN ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday announced her candidacy for the 2024 Republican bid for the US presidency. "We are more than ready for a new generation to lead us into the future," the 51-year-old declared. What does her candidacy portend?
An almost extinct type of politician
Nikki Haley is different from many of her party colleagues, writes La Libre Belgique:
“Nikki Haley represents a species on the American right that one fears will die out. ... She has both domestic and foreign policy experience. She is moderate, intelligent and reasonable, while many of her peers have fallen into extremism, simplification and conspiracy theories. She is clearly a diplomat - a valuable quality at a time when the partisan divisions in Washington seem insurmountable. It is therefore to be hoped that Haley, alone or together with similarly minded candidates, can prevent the tragic confiscation of the Republican Party by Donald Trump and his heirs cast in the same mould.”
High heels against Trump
Journalist Željko Trkanjec writes in Jutarnji list:
“High heels are striding into the highest echelons of US politics. Nikki Haley has entered the race for the Republican presidential nomination, much to the regret of many misogynists in the party. ... The politically incorrect machismo that ex-president Donald Trump embodied is still widely cherished. The white man is the desired choice. And when I mentioned high heels I wasn't being sexist or derogatory - the metaphor was used by Nikki Haley herself: 'You should know this about me. I don't put up with bullies. And when you kick back, it hurts them more if you're wearing heels.'”
Time for a younger generation of politicians
The US desperately needs the new generation of leaders Haley is calling for, Politiken notes:
“It's not just Trump who needs to become a thing of the past. The entire compromised Republican leadership with figures like Mitch McConnell in the Senate needs to be replaced. But Haley's message should also provoke reflection in the Democratic Party. ... Biden really has a lot to be proud of. ... But after more than 50 years as a top politician, he - and the Democrats - should also seriously consider whether it's not time to pass the torch and let younger generations take the helm.”
