Is Google facilitating Nazi propaganda?
Criticism of search engine Google is growing in Sweden. Searches using the keywords "Sweden" and "Jews" or "Holocaust" lead to an anti-Semitic blog that lists, describes in detail and threatens Swedish Jews. According to research by the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Expressen this is by no means an isolated case. Journalists vent their anger.
Hatred and sensationalism as a business model
Society lets the Internet giants get away with far too much, Aftonbladet believes:
“Likes and shares are the currency of the social media. Aggressive and sensational material brings in big money. ... Youtube, for example [which belongs to Google] leads users into a subterranean world full of conspiracy theories and extremism, and Google happily rakes in the advertising money. ... It's a business model that is to all appearances changing our democracy. It goes hand in hand with an enormous responsibility, but the Internet giants aren't interested in that. As a society we cannot simply tolerate this.”
Keep an eye on the giants
In Sweden people have been far too trustful of Google, Expressen criticises:
“For a long time a naive hallelujah attitude towards Google prevailed here . ... Political discussions focussed mainly on how to improve the tax system for the Internet giants. But following the research by Expressen and Dagens Nyheter, their halos are slipping. ... It's important to continue the research. As the most powerful company in the world Google must be subject to journalistic monitoring. The Internet giant must no longer be able to evade responsibility.”
