The UK: arson attack on migrant centre
Incendiary devices were thrown at a migrant centre in Dover, southern England, on Sunday, leaving one person with minor injuries. In the wake of the attack hundreds of refugees were transferred to the overcrowded Manston immigration centre in Kent. What action should be taken?
The failures of inhumane politicians
It is not the migrants who are to blame here, stresses The Guardian:
“Public hostility to desperate people fleeing to our shores has been systematically ramped up by politicians, newspapers and broadcasters. With legal routes closed off, asylum seekers arriving on small boats are portrayed as a sinister invading force. Local citizens languishing on social housing waiting lists (because of politicians' refusal to build council homes) or stuck waiting weeks for GP appointments (because of an underfunded health service) are led to believe that the problem lies with desperate newcomers. ... Until we stop allowing politicians and their media allies to scapegoat asylum seekers for problems caused by the powerful, these scandals will happen again and again.”
Deter migrants instead of attracting them
It's high time the British government adopted a tougher approach, The Daily Telegraph believes:
“The key to this is to stop so many coming in the first place, not provide hotel facilities to welcome them. That would merely become another of the many pull factors that are already drawing them to the UK. Somehow, Britain has to become less attractive to would-be illegal migrants who claim asylum despite having passed through two or three safe countries. .... Those with no proper claim should be removed quickly.”
